ACA September Construction Industry Statistics Package

ACA’s construction industry statistics package is a monthly snapshot at the current state of Alberta’s construction industry which covers several key parameters. These monthly statistical overviews provide employers, employees, industry members and others involved in Alberta’s construction community with key economic and demographic data that impact construction each month. The package brings together key indicators of Alberta’s construction and economic activity, including the current number of construction employees, average weekly industry wages, and the number of expected retirements by 2035.

September’s package notes multiple variances and updates since the release of August’s edition, including average weekly wages going from $1,697 to $1,709 or the current number of construction employees decreasing from 287,100 to 286,400, while still representing a 9.7% increase year over year.

Below are other industry-related updates since the release of ACA’s last statistics package:

  • Canada’s counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion in U.S. goods took effect September 8, 2026, following the United States’ 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports. For Alberta’s construction industry, tariffs may increase material and equipment costs, disrupt supply chains and create greater uncertainty around project pricing and timelines.
  • Several school building projects across Alberta are in the proposed – planning stage according to Alberta Major Projects. The projects are among the Government of Alberta’s approved capital projects supporting school construction across the province.
  • Significant proposed overpass rehabilitation projects include the 6 Street SE Underpass in Calgary and the 17 Street and Yellowhead Trail Overpass in Edmonton.

With construction continuing to be an important contributor to Alberta’s economy, tracking trends in investment, employment, activity and trade provides insight into the factors shaping the industry. As tariffs and other economic developments continue to affect construction, ACA’s monthly statistics package will highlight key trends and provide timely information for those working in and following the industry.
