Safety In Construction
Wildfire Information Sheet
The Alberta Construction Association (ACA) recognizes that wildfire season creates unique risks for construction sites, from evacuations and equipment loss to poor air quality that can affect worker safety. To support members, ACA has developed a Construction Wildfire Preparation and Emergency Response Information Sheet, created with input from our Workforce and Safety Committee, specifically for construction operations.
The resource outlines practical steps for site managers, contractors, and crews, including: preparing job sites for evacuation, assembling go-bags and travel plans, supporting workers during poor air quality, and accessing trusted government and non-government resources. It’s not an exhaustive checklist, but a set of key considerations to help guide planning.
As Alberta continues to face hotter, drier summers and more frequent wildfire alerts, proactive preparation is essential. We encourage all ACA members to review this resource and integrate it into their site safety plans.
Increase In Occupational Health And Safety Inspections
Alberta’s construction industry is seeing more OHS inspections, particularly on large, long-duration projects. Government officials have confirmed that officers are currently prioritizing:
- Injuries involving large machinery
- Fall protection compliance
- Chemical storage and handling
With staffing back near pre-pandemic levels (about 135 officers), this increase reflects both added capacity and targeted safety initiatives.
For many members, especially those on complex or high-profile sites, this can feel like heightened scrutiny and has reinforced the need for consistent, balanced enforcement.
What ACA Is Doing
- Monitoring inspection trends
- Collecting member feedback
- Raising industry concerns directly with OHS and the Minister’s office
What You Can Do
- Report your experiences to your Local Construction Association or ACA
- Strengthen compliance in the three priority areas
- Support balanced enforcement by engaging with ACA’s advocacy
