In this month’s newsletter, we discuss new OHS inspection information, introduce our new committees, wildfire preparation for our members, our Digital Tradesperson Program, and the ACA’s involvement with the recent Build Environment Edmonton event.
June was a busy month for the ACA, where we not only continued our mission for Alberta’s construction industry, but also where we took an informative look at new advancements for the industry. Highlights include:
- Increasing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspections are raising questions amongst Albertan contractors and tradespeople. According to OHS officials, three areas currently being prioritized are injuries involving large machinery, fall protection compliance, and safe storage/handling of chemicals. Inspection increases matter to the ACA due to a feeling among some members of being scrutinized and watched over, which calls for stronger advocacy.
- ACA launched 3 new committees for the betterment of our advocacy, service to members, and overall industry excellence. The new committees are Government Advocacy, Workforce/Safety, and Innovation/Sustainability.
- We covered the ever-important topic of planning to ensure safe construction sites across the province in the coming months of wildfire season. Some of this planning includes developing site-specific emergency response plans, maintaining fire breaks around work areas, training crews on wildfire procedures, and ensuring access to water sources or fire suppression equipment.
- Lastly, our Digital Tradesperson Program is redefining how tradespeople connect with opportunities by offering a streamlined platform to showcase skills, build digital portfolios, and accessing employment tools.
