The Alberta-Canada Cooperation Agreement will streamline major project reviews and create a one project – one review approach that provides clearer processes, fewer delays, and stronger investor certainty.
Industry members and investors have had concerns over the years that allowing federal and provincial assessments to overlap can cause delays, skyrocket project costs, and add uncertainty to projects, while also negatively impacting the environment.
The Alberta-Canada Cooperation Agreement aims to combat these concerns by streamlining approvals, supporting responsible resource development, and deterring duplication by implementing the one-project, one-review approach.
The agreement focuses on allowing Canada to adhere to Alberta’s own environment and regulatory systems for projects within provincial jurisdiction. If both provincial and federal assessments are needed for a projects, there may be collaboration between both to ensure no duplication arises by permitting and reviewing conditions of a project.
With major projects approaching $200 billion across Alberta and growing workforce pressures, ensuring predictable approval times are essential.
The ACA would like to thank Grant Hunter, the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas of Alberta for moving this important milestone forward. We will continue working with government partners to improve regulatory efficiency, unlock investment, and support the skilled workforce needed to deliver the projects moving forward.
