ACA May Construction Industry Statistics Package

The ACA’s Industry Statistics Package is a glance at key numbers detailing the importance of the construction industry to the overall well-being of the province. This is a valuable source of information for employers, workers, and construction association members alike. This latest edition highlights key industry metrics, including Alberta’s construction sector contributions to GDP, the number of working apprentices in the skilled construction trades, and the value of proposed projects across the province.

This month saw several statistical changes since the publishing of our last package, namely:

  • The average weekly wages of full-time construction workers in Alberta went up from $1,503 to $1,722, a 0.7% increase year over year.
  • An increase in the total number of current Alberta construction employees from around 247,100 to 252,100.
  • An increase in the total amount that construction contributes to the Alberta economy, from $29.1 billion to $31.6 billion.

Furthermore, the value of total proposed construction projects in Alberta has increased from $196.1 billion in March 2026, to $244.9 billion as of May 19, 2026, according to Alberta Major Projects.

According to the Alberta Economic Dashboard’s current figures, the unemployment rate for construction workers is down by -0.8% year over year, along with the value of building permits having reached $1.6 billion.

The release of the Registrar’s Report and Statistical Overview 2024-25 from Apprenticeship and Industry Training last month also gives further insight into apprenticeship training and the success of skilled construction trades programs. According to the report, 2024-25 saw 72,748 total apprentices registered across all trades programs, which is a substantial increase from 2023-24’s 64,756 registrations.

Alberta’s construction industry continues to be a key player in driving economic investment, growth, and employment throughout the province.
